Meningitis B added to UK schedule

Meningitis B is being included into the national schedule as of 1st September 2015 for all children born on or after 1st July 2015, with a limited catch up programme for those born between 1st May – 30th June 2015.

It will be given at 8 weeks and 16 weeks, with a 3rd dose at 1 year of age.

This vaccine will protect children from Meningitis B which can cause serious illness and long-term complications.

The vaccine is likely to cause fever so the advice is to give children paracetamol immediately prior to their 1st and 3rd immunisation appointments.
